British great Laura Kenny sets sights on Paris

LONDON, Nov 27 (Reuters) - Track cyclist Laura Kenny, Britain's most successful female Olympian, has set her sights on making the team for the Paris Games despite barely having competed in the past two years. Kenny gave birth to her second child in July after suffering a miscarriage in November 2021 and then having surgery following an ectopic pregnancy. Kenny, who is married to now-retired track cyclist Jason Kenny, Britain's most-decorated Olympian with seven golds, competed at the London, Rio and Tokyo Games and was dominant force in the endurance disciplines. Kenny gave birth to her first son Albie in 2017 and Monty was born in July this year. They will never have the burden of thinking, 'Oh, mum had me and then ended her career.'"

MANCHESTER, England, Nov 27 (Reuters) - The last time Manchester City hosted RB Leipzig is not a night Josko Gvardiol remembers with great fondness. "I'm happy to be his team mate," Gvardiol said when asked about the difference between playing against or with Haaland. "It wasn't just about Haaland, it was the first team on the pitch (last season), it was a hard game. As a centre back I was looking forward to facing Haaland but it didn't finish good. Haaland reached the 50-goal mark in the Premier League in record time at the weekend and Gvardiol said watching the Norwegian at work is remarkable.

Superb Sinner leads Italy to Davis Cup glory against Australia

Italy's number one Sinner produced a devastating display to outclass a helpless De Minaur 6-3 6-0 after Matteo Arnaldi outlasted Alexei Popyrin in the first singles clash. "It helps a lot to play for the whole team and it's been an incredible feeling for all of us," Sinner said as Italy rejoiced at a first Davis Cup title since 1976 and only second ever. Lleyton Hewitt's Australia have now been beaten in the final in successive years having lost to Canada in 2022. But Trent Alexander-Arnold drilled in an 80th-minute equaliser with his right foot to deny City a 24th successive home win in all competitions. The result left City on 29 points from 13 games with Liverpool one point behind and Arsenal later claimed a late 1-0 victory at Brentford thanks to Kai Havertz's header. Arsenal leapfrogged Liverpool and City into first place with 30 points. Haaland did what he does best, firing home after Alisson's poor clearance had found its way to Nathan Ake. Djokovic sends Serbia into Davis Cup semi against Italy
  + stars: | 2023-11-23 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
The 36-year-old world number one, looking to complete a remarkable year by helping his country win the Davis Cup for the second time, outclassed Norrie to become his country's most successful Davis Cup player. Serbia will face Italy on Saturday after Jannik Sinner inspired his team to a comeback win over the Netherlands, the world number four winning his singles and a decisive doubles . But world number 55 Kecmanovic produced a brilliant performance to beat Draper 7-6(2) 7-6(6) in a fierce battle. That never looked likely, however, as Djokovic, who won three of the year's four Grand Slam titles and last week's ATP Finals for a record seventh time, dissected the world number 18. Earlier, in the Martin Carpena Arena which has seen big crowds for Final Eight, Italy kept alive their hopes of a first Davis Cup title since 1976.

Wales miss automatic Euro 2024 place after draw with Turkey

CARDIFF, Nov 21 (Reuters) - Wales will have to take their chances in the playoffs for Euro 2024 after the country's automatic qualifying hopes were dashed following a 1-1 draw with Turkey in their final Group D game on Tuesday. Needing to beat Turkey to have a chance of qualifying at the expense of Croatia, who were hosting Armenia, Wales made a dream start as Neco Williams fired them ahead after seven minutes. Hope then ebbed further away when Yusuf Yazici equalised for Turkey from the penalty spot after 70 minutes. "We're disappointed we haven't qualified automatically, but I'm off tomorrow to find out who we've got in the draw for the playoff. Turkey improved in the second half though and were awarded a soft-looking penalty when Wales skipper Ben Davies was harshly-adjudged to have fouled Kenan Yildiz.

"Naturally, we are disappointed by the London Borough of Wandsworth's decision," Sally Bolton, Chief Executive of the All England Club, said in a statement. In 2018 the AELTC's 65 million pounds ($81 million) bid for Wimbledon Park Golf Club was accepted by members. The tennis club argues that its expansion plans would actually return private land back to the public. Djokovic destroys Sinner to win record seventh ATP Finals title
  + stars: | 2023-11-19 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
TURIN, Nov 19 (Reuters) - A ruthless Novak Djokovic destroyed home favourite Jannik Sinner to win the ATP Finals title for a record seventh time on Sunday -- reaching yet another milestone in his incredible career. A sell-out crowd in Turin's Pala Alpitour had hoped to cheer the 22-year-old Sinner to the biggest title of his career but Djokovic was simply in a different league. At one point Djokovic won 14 points in a row against a player ranked fourth in the world before Sinner briefly slowed the march of the 24-time Grand Slam champion. Djokovic also failed to convert break points that would have given him a 5-2 lead as a few errors crept into his game. The crowd tried their best to energise their man but Djokovic moved on towards victory and a Sinner double fault ended the contest.

Sinner, the only player to win all three group matches, will face either world number one Novak Djokovic or number two Carlos Alcaraz in Sunday's final. Sinner secured a decisive break in the next game as some errors flew off the Medvedev racket. Medvedev, sticking relentlessly to his heavy baseline game, grabbed the initiative and levelled the contest when Sinner sent a forehand over the baseline. The world number four brought up three match points with a superb backhand winner and sealed victory at the first attempt. After losing his first six matches against Medvedev, Sinner has now won three in a row against the Russian.

World number two Alcaraz suffered an opening round-robin defeat by Alexander Zverev, but responded with a confident display, albeit against an unravelling Russian. Rublev managed to hang on in the first set but wavered at 5-5 when he dropped his serve -- Alcaraz then claiming the opening set with a comfortable hold. Things deteriorated rapidly for Rublev when he dropped serve at the start of the second set. Alcaraz took complete control after that with Rublev seemingly playing against the Spaniard and himself. This is the level I have to play if I want to give myself a chance in this amazing tournament," Alcaraz said.

City, according to Opta Analyst, have an 84.6% probability of lifting the trophy again with Liverpool given only a 9.1% chance and last season's runners-up Arsenal on 5.6%. Back-to-back defeats for Tottenham Hotspur mean that, according to Opta, their title hopes are virtually non-existent at 0.3%, the same as Aston Villa. Manchester United, currently in sixth place, are predicted to finish seventh and only have a 5.9% chance of finishing in the top four, although that has risen slightly of late. Nov 14 (Reuters) - When Carlos Alcaraz beat Novak Djokovic to win Wimbledon in July it seemed the Spaniard's stratospheric career trajectory was limitless and he would take a stranglehold on men's tennis. A few months later, however, 24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic has re-asserted his authority and Alcaraz is experiencing the first slump of his career. The 20-year-old bemoaned the fast playing conditions in Turin after a surprise loss to Germany's Alexander Zverev in his opening match at the ATP Finals on Monday. Before the mayhem of Monday's home defeat against Chelsea, Wolves away would have been viewed as another opportunity for Tottenham to underline their top-four credentials. But that 4-1 reverse, Postecoglou's first setback in the Premier League, could cost the north London club more than a return to top spot and the loss of three points. A tumultuous derby ended with Tottenham having only four of their starting line-up left on the pitch.
